The sofa buying guide

How to Choose a Sofa Size for a Small Living Room

Compare a sofa's full footprint, room layout, and delivery route before using a room preview to explore its appearance.

Choose a sofa by comparing its full dimensions with the space you can actually use. Width alone is not enough: check depth, layout, nearby furniture, and how the sofa will enter your home.

A room photo is useful for visual context. Measure the space separately before ordering.

Mark out the space in your room

Decide where the sofa would sit and mark its proposed footprint on the floor with removable tape or another suitable temporary marker. Include the whole product, not just the seating area.

Walk through the room as you normally would. Check doors, drawers, access to other seats, and the routes you use. Consider everyone who needs to use the room rather than relying on one universal clearance number.

Compare the right product dimensions

DetailWhat to check
Overall width and depthThe full sofa footprint, including arms and any chaise
ConfigurationThe exact arrangement and orientation shown for the option you will order
Extended positionAdditional space required by a recliner or sofa bed, where applicable
HeightIts relationship to windows, nearby surfaces, and the rest of the room
Delivery dimensionsPackage or component dimensions, following the seller's instructions

Use the dimensions of the exact product or variant. A similar-looking sofa, another color listing, or another arrangement may have different information.

Check how it will get inside

Review the delivery route from the building entrance to the final position. Note doorways, corners, stairs, lifts, and other restrictions. Follow the seller's measurement and delivery guidance, including whether the item arrives assembled or in separate components.

If the listing does not clearly state the required dimensions or delivery method, ask the seller before ordering. An AI image cannot settle a delivery question.

Use a preview for visual comparison

Once you have checked the measurements, a room preview can help you consider the visual direction: how a shape or color might relate to the rest of the room.

The apparent fit in a generated image is not measurement evidence. Keep the product specifications and your room notes alongside the preview when deciding.
